Hello, y'all !! I'm a senior graduating this semester and about to start 3 years of STEM OPT. As you guys may have seen in the news that the military has carried out a coup d'etat again in Myanmar, my home country on Feb 1st, 2021. I had planned to use my OPT fully and then go back and start something on my own back home. But with the current turmoil in Myanmar, I don't know if I want to go back. I grew up under military rule and we were so behind in terms of education and progress (we still are) compared to other nations.
The way I see it, I have two options.
(1) Do 3 years of STEM OPT -> H1B -> GC. (I'm well aware of how nearly impossible it is to get an H1B visa and also a company to sponsor me a green card).
(2) Seek asylum and get a GC after (x) years.
However, I'm a little confused about how the status of my work authorization would change if I transitioned from OPT to an asylee.
